What is an OFFLINE vs. an ONLINE BACKUP?

When an Exchange Server is operational it is ONLINE and available to send and receive messages for internal and external clients. Usually you would run an ONLINE backup on the Microsoft Exchange Server via an Exchange Backup Agent from your tape backup manufacturer. The benefit of utilizing an ONLINE backup agent is that there is no interruption of service to internal or external clients.

The OFFLINE BACKUP means that all Exchange Services will be stopped, and then a backup of the Microsoft Exchange Directories and files can take place as a normal file level backup. During an OFFLINE process all internal and external users will not be able to send or receive messages from the system. The benefit of creating an OFFLINE backup is that you are able to restore a complete system from its last known state.
