Exchange Email Archiving Needs Message Store Optimization:
"Email archiving solutions yank core data out of the database, leaving a stub behind that can be used to view or extract the data. Since 80% of the data is archived, people think the database will automatically become smaller and more efficient. Email archiving vendors encourage customers in this belief. In practice, it doesn't work that way" said David Ferris, of Ferris Research "Email archiving products do nothing to reclaim the vacated space, nor do they check and correct errors, indexes, or other issues that must be addressed to ensure the health and optimization of the message store. Administrators have to do this manually, with specialized utilities, and they have to shut down Exchange to do so. It's all a pain.

According to IT research firm META Group, close to 20 percent of unplanned Exchange downtime is due to corruption of the database or Active Directory.
