How to Restore Categories without doing a Full Mailbox Restore?

If you need to restore Categories individually without doing a full mailbox restore, you have a couple of different solution to accomplish this.

Option 1 - Drag and Drop Restore

1. Add the production database that contains the mailbox you wish to restore the Categories to.

2. Connect to the production database you added and navigate to the Calendar folder of the mailbox you wish to restore the Categories to.

3. Add the offline database that contains the Categories you wish to restore.

4. Mount the offline database you added and navigate to the Calendar folder of the mailbox you wish to restore the Categories from.

5. Now you just need to find the items in the offline mailbox's Calendar folder with the Message Class IPM.Configuration.CategoryList and Drag and Drop those items to the production mailbox's Calendar folder.

Option 2 - Search Results Restore

1. Add the offline database that contains the Categories you wish to restore.

2. Mount the offline database you added.

3. Open a new search from either the database level or the desired mailbox level.

4. Navigate to the Advanced tab and set the following Query Criteria:

   • Category set to All Mail fields

   • Field set to Message Class

   • Condition set to is (exactly)

   • Value set to IPM.Configuration.CategoryList

   NOTE: If you would like to speed up the search, you can set the Scope of the search to only search Calendar folders.

5. After running the search, select the Categories items you wish to restore and select File > Restore Wizard...
